If it does not have one, I would like to add an audible alarm to mine. I searched the owner's manual and I found reference to an engine "overheat warning" but I could not find any details about it. The second time, the plastic water pump impeller ('03 GTI) crumbled into 5 pieces but it sounded an audible alarm which made me scan the gauges where I discovered a bright red light on the temp gauge and the temp gauge pegged. That caused me to scan the gauges and discover that the temp gauge was pegged. The first time, a thermostat failed to open and the car started running rough, probably because the gas started to boil in the carburetor. Twice in my life, I have had overheated engines and temperature gauges and, both times, they took me by surprise. Lately, I not only have to watch out for errant drivers, I have to watch out for bullets because of lunatics with guns killing other drivers for being in their way Brothers steer car to safety after dad fatally shot on Houston freeway. I live in a big city with horrendous traffic and it has always been hard (dangerous, actually) to take my eyes off the road to scan the gauges. In the meantime, I wondered if my car has an audible alarm or a warning light for an overheating engine. I would love to fix this gauge and be done with it. I am following a discussion in which Storm9C1 is threatening to find a way to use a resistor to stop the needle from slamming hard on the right side when the car is started in an effort to prevent the needle slipping on its shaft ( ). It works for a while, then the readings drift toward cold until I re-clock it again. I have a '95 9C1 with the LT-1 engine and I have been re-clocking the needle on my coolant temperature gauge for many years.
